Thousands petition Government over income shifting
by Susie Hughes at 10:54 25/04/08 (Section 660)
The online petition against the Government’s 'family business tax' proposals closes today (24 April) with over 7,500 signatures – putting it in the top 20 of the 6,500 petitions on the 10 Downing Street website.

The petition, launched by Professional Contractors Group (PCG), has to date attracted more support than calls to reduce fuel duty, not to extend pre-charge detention, and to protect small shops.

PCG’s managing director John Brazier said: “PCG would like to thank every one of the7,500 people who signed the petition.

"Communicating the strength of feeling among the business community played a huge role in persuading the Government to delay and rethink their proposals; this e-petition was a key part of that, along with the Early Day Motion and the letters sent by PCG members and others to their MPs.”

Clarity
When it announced its decision to postpone income shifting or the so-called Family Business Tax, the Government admitted that it needed to provide – the uncertainty the measure would cause was one of the major criticisms levelled at the proposals by the petition.

The petition will be passed to officials for a formal response; signatories can expect to receive a copy of the response by email.
