Vampires and ghouls at ATSCo's charity ball
by Susie Hughes at 07:18 22/10/03 (News on Agents)
The agency world donned their black ties and evening dresses recently to raise nearly £50,000 for the NSPCC at an 'ATSCo Vampire Ball' at the Dorchester Hotel in London which was dressed like a gothic mansion for the occasion.
It is the fourth occasion that the agents' representative body, ATSCo, and its members have held a Charity Ball, combining it with an agents' awards ceremony.

ATSCo has adopted the NSPCC as its charitable cause and has pledged to raise £1 million for the group through a variety of its own fund-raising events and activities organised by member companies.

It was also the night of the agent's own 'Oscars' and Atsco's Chief Executive, Ann Swain, was 'master of ceremonies' annoucing the winners in a variety of categories.

  • Corporate member of the year - sponsored by JSA Services

  • ATSCo/NSPCC award for charity fund raising
  • Selected by the NSPCC
  • Winner - Parity Resourcing Solutions

Ann Swain also presented an individual award to Peter Flaherty, one of the founding members of the Executive Committee, who worked with ATSCo during its formation.

The judges were David McHattie of Barclays Corporate Division, management consultant Stephen Peerless and Karen Dempsey, Editor of Recruiter Magazine. The winner of the ATSCo Member of the Year Award was chosen by the ATSCo executive committee. The winner of the ATSCO/NSPCC Award for Charity Fundraising was chosen by the NSPCC.

Auction
More than £30,000 was raised through an open auction when the various agents' tables bid against each other for eight donated 'lots' under the control of two auctioneers from Christie's.

Among the lots which caught their attention were a Manchester United Shirt signed by David Beckham and an England shirt signed Sven Goran-Erikkson. The England captain proved a more valuable commodity than his national squad manager.

Other lots included trips to Dublin, Las Vegas, Transylvania and a day at the races.

Ann Swain said: "Tickets for this year’s charity ball sold out in record time and twice as much money was raised for the NSPCC as last year – a good indication of confidence picking up. Our first Member of the Year awards ceremony helped make this year’s event the best ever.

"The ATSCo ball has transformed itself over the years from a fundraising and social event into an excellent opportunity for the staffing industry to celebrate quality."
