Start of round-the-country freelancers seminars
by Susie Hughes at 10:19 24/03/04 (News from Partners)
Qdos Consulting and Shout99 kicked off their series of round-the-country seminars on the latest tax treatment and advice for freelancers in Aberdeen last night (March 23).
Experts from Qdos and Shout99 including: Carl Whittaker, Kevin Miller and Steve Greenwell explained to an audience of freelancers, small businesses, accountants and advisers how to operate efficiently and most effectively in the current climate.

The topics covered by the presentations included:

  • IR35 - despite earlier rumours, IR35 is here to stay - at least for the foreseeable future. However, the situation has clarified from earlier years and most freelancers should be able to operate outside it, with good advice and professional representation. The session explained how to position yourself outside IR35.

  • Dividend tax - after months of speculation, the Budget revealed the detail of the new measure, known as IR591, a 19 per cent tax on dividends.

  • Section 660 - the controversial tax on businesses owned by married couples, families and friends. Despite protestations from professional bodies, the Treasury has indicated it's not only going to continue with Section 660 enforcement but has strengthened its hand in the Budget. The panel explained how to mitigate the risk of a Section 660 dispute.

After the main presentations, the experts were available for a Question and Answer session where a wide range of general and specific questions relating to running small businesses were asked.
