Housekeeping: Posting comments
by Susie Hughes at 12:28 09/04/08 (Shout99)
I have received a number of complaints recently about some postings on Shout99. As a result, I'd like to make a few 'house-keeping' comments about posting.
Shout99
Shout99 is, I hope, a valuable resource for freelancers to gain information and share experiences, knowledge and thoughts on issues which affect their businesses.

I am pleased that, to date, I have never 'banned' anyone - primarily because of the quality of the majority of posters and posts on the site. The occasional posts I have removed have been for valid reasons - eg offensive, potentially libellous etc.

I'm proud of the quality of the debate on Shout99, thanks to the majority of the contributors, and want to keep it that way.

Off topic
The format of Shout99 is such that I write articles which can then be commented on, or I publish other submissions, eg Letters, which can then be commented on.

I can appreciate that a real life and therefore a virtual conversation can veer 'off-topic' and to a certain extent this will happen on threads. However, it is unhelpful to those who wish to follow a thread for it to be interrupted by a series of off-topic posts.

There is a Letters section and a Clubhouse where I am happy to publish new off-topic subjects - and they can be discussed there. (For example, Liverpool's amazing performance against Arsenal last night).

It's been suggested to me that Shout99 should have a 'blog' or 'forum' area. To a certain extent, that's what the Clubhouse is.....but there doesn't seem much call for it judging by the few posts it receives. There are many other websites where ad hoc discussions can take place so I think Shout99 should stick to its core business.

However, if there is a widespread call for it, it's something we'll look at again.

Bickering, insulting etc
Please don't.

Multiple user ids
I can appreciate that some people will have more than one user id, whether it's because they post under a 'business' and 'personal' identity, or if they've just forgotten one and created another or rejoined after a period of time.

However, please don't create multiple user ids to 'wind people up', to establish false persona or to argue with yourself. It's not difficult for Simon and me to work out who's who and what's happening.

Conclusion
Moderation of Shout99 has been with a light touch. I want it to continue that way. I'd be grateful if posters extend common courtesy to others in all of the above points.
