On more than one occasion, the Government has sought to protect a vulnerable sector of the work-force and the sledge-hammer has been wielded so wide that it has taken down freelancers in its wake.
IR35, originally a laudable intention to protecting vulnerable workers forced into a form of self-employment; agency workers rights, protecting those forced into self-employment.....and now the clampdown on so-called 'false self-employment'.
The intention is to protect those workers who are placed into a 'false' self-employment state via mass-marketed schemes, often without their full knowledge or understanding, and mainly for their employers' financial benefit.
But there are fears growing in the sector that the solution might go wider than the problem.
Fear of the unintended consequences of 'false self-employment' rules
Rules on false self-employment go too far
Government fails to understand complexities of onshore intermediaries
