VDU glasses, can I claim on my SA?
by gjctech at 08:22 25/03/14 (Ask-Legal-Accounting)
I work through an umbrella company and required new VDU glasses for my current contract. The umbrella company are reluctant to provide these even though they must by law since I'm a VDU worker!
I was getting headaches and so had an eye test, which revealed I needed new VDU glasses. I contacted the umbrella company and at first they refused to provide because they have no dispensation. I need the glasses to work and so I had to either buy them or quit my contract. In the meantime I sent them links to the relevant legislation and to HMRC info that said they don't need a dispensation and don't even need to report the supply of VDU glasses.

That was in October. By mid November, they were still reluctant. I sent them both my prescription and my receipt from the optician, but they still haven't reimbursed me. I escalated the case iaw their procedures but they haven't even deigned to respond.

As I'm in the 40% tax band, unless I can claim on my self assessment, I suspect that their reluctance could cost me about 60% of the price of the specs. Hence this post to find out whether VDU glasses are allowable on personal self assessment?
