Newsletter 463: A Budget for small business - but not freelancers
by Newsletter Editor at 10:20 22/03/16 ( Shout99 Newsletter)
Freelancers and contractors were left feeling like the poor relation of the small business community after the Budget.
While it was generally welcomed as a boost for small firms on business rates and corporation tax, the freelancing sector was feeling down about what was in it and what wasn't in when it came to their business model.

As had been speculated in the media, employers and agencies will have to take on the responsibility for deducting tax and NI from public sector contractors...and there were concerns that this would be the thin end of the wedge and it would eventually spread to the private sector.

There was also annoyance that pleas to think again on the abolition of the travel and substance relief had fallen on deaf ears.

Reports on all issues relevant to freelancers and small businesses - and expert reaction and analysis - are available in the Political News section of Shout99.
