Lotus Notes is used to coordinate and collaborate efficiently. By using Lotus Notes, people and workgroups in multiple locations can collect, share, and work with information in a database, in a central location.

Lotus Notes also provides a high quality secure e-mail system with calendar, to do's and resource booking.

A database is a collection of related information organized for easy retrieval. The word "database" is usually associated with computers, but databases are actually used all the time. Many physical systems for organization such as card files, encyclopedias, phone books and dictionaries all qualify as databases.

Lotus Notes databases are used to share information and coordinate team projects. Many types of information can be held in Notes databases - text, formatted text, file attachments etc.

Types of databases include:
Mail
Discussion
Team Room
Mail-in (shared mail)
Document storage

Security in Notes is extremely flexible and granular. It can be set at almost every level from system to field to give different access rights.
