What does a Technical Author Do?

This article describes briefly the type of work undertaken by a freelance technical author/technical writer, how the work is carried out and what sort of resources the technical author requires.
Experiencing the cultural gap between technical authors and other technical people and management, I wrote this document, which has been widely circulated and is on the reading lists of at least two universities offering technical writing courses.
