Building a better Graphical front-end
by gcawte at 15:09 29/01/03 (Seminar>Consultant)
Providing an easily configurable graphical front-end has long been the holy grail of SCADA and PLC vendors. Whilst there are solutions from large corporations that are able to do this, they are generally hugely expensive, and often based around a fee structure that requires clients to dip into their pockets for every separate point being monitored. Now there is a better alternative...
Cambridge-based Cadence Software Ltd were approached by Florida-based Real Time Integration (RTI: www.rtiww.com) to develop a graphical front-end for their existing Carton Sorting System (CSS) product. RTI is an established industry leader in the provision of software products for the control of materials handling systems and provides a wide range of consulting and implementation services to retailers, manufacturers, distributors, and third-party logistics providers. The graphical front-end that RTI required had to be sufficiently flexible to allow the various pieces of supply chain equipment (conveyors, motors, diverts) to be represented, and simple enough to use to enable RTI to quickly tailor solutions to match individual customers installations. Cadence Software employed their own product called Peleton that leverages the power and flexibility of COM with XML as a configuration language, to offer RTI the solution they were seeking to enable them to move their product line into the next generation in record time. Cadence Software provided RTI with a one-off development licence and training to allow their own engineers to roll out Peleton solutions for all of their future installations, and enable them to expand its capabilities to work with new systems in their product line.

Cadence Software is currently working with a UK-based client to incorporate OPC (OLE for Process Control) support into Peleton to add its existing SQL back-end support. Peleton is also being enhanced to turn it into a web-based service to provide truly flexible, remote monitoring capabilities.
