He is well-known to freelancers for taking several initiatives relating to the threats and opportunities facing the freelance community.
As a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Small Business he played an active role in the recent review of freelancers and participated in a pilot study within his own constituency.
 Mark Prisk MP: Shadow Paymaster General | He organised a seminar for the Conservative Treasury Front Bench team with Shout99 earlier in 2003 for a number of groups associated with freelancers to help the Party formulate their policy on the subject.
He also introduced the 'Right to Be Self Employed' Bill in the House of Commons in 2002 and has actively campaigned against Section 660 - the business tax on family and friends.
Mark who was formerly Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury will be dealing with a wide range of tax issues affecting both individuals and business. These responsibilities include Income Tax, VAT, Excise Duties, National Insurance, Corporation Taxes and Stamp Duty Land Tax. In addition, he will be supporting the Shadow Secretary of State for Industry in handling small business issues.
Mr Prisk will be one of four Shadow Economic Affairs spokespersons with specific Treasury responsibilities. His team is represented in the Shadow Cabinet by Oliver Letwin MP, the Shadow Chancellor.
Mark Prisk said: "I'm delighted by this promotion and look forward to working with Oliver Letwin and my colleagues on the vital issue of tax. After 60 tax rises under Labour, tax payers are getting a rotten deal. It's time taxpayers had a fair deal."
He has been the Conservative MP for Hertford and Stortford since June 2001. From November 2002 to November 2003 he was Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury. He is also the Treasurer of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Small Business.
Mark Prisk's opposite number in the Labour Party will be Paymaster General, Dawn Primarolo, who was the architect of IR35.
