In a series of Written Questions to the Treasury, Mr Prisk, tried to ascertain information relating to the tax which has been in operation for four years.
Not possible
He began by asking: what additional revenue has been secured from investigations under the IR35 regulation (a) in total and (b) for each year since its implementation?
His opposite number, Paymaster General, Dawn Primarolo, replied: Establishing whether or not the intermediaries legislation applies is undertaken as part of the Inland Revenue's Employer Compliance Review programme. As such it is not possible with any accuracy to isolate data relating solely to this legislation.
No data
Mark Prisk tried a different approach, asking: what estimate has been made of the (a) administration and (b) employment costs arising from pursuing investigations under IR35 regulation.
Ms Primarolo replied: There is no data held on administration and employment costs relating solely to this legislation.
Not possible
His final attempt related to the number of investigations. Mr. Prisk asked: how many investigations under the IR35 regulation have (a) been initiated, (b) resulted in additional revenue and (c) been concluded without securing additional revenue.
Ms Primarolo repeated her first answer. "Establishing whether or not the intermediaries legislation applies is undertaken as part of the Inland Revenue's Employer Compliance Review programme. As such it is not possible with any accuracy to isolate data relating solely to this legislation."

Since 'going to press', Mark Prisk MP has given Shout99 the following comment, which indicates this is not the end of the matter.
Mark Prisk, Shadow Paymaster General, said: " When Ministers cited the case for IR35, we were told that it was needed to stem an important loss of revenue. Now they can't tell us how much revenue is being lost, if any. It just isn't good enough and I shall be looking to pursue this matter further."
