Labour leader, Ed Milliband, took a side-swipe at rogue agencies and warned them that the next Labour Government would crack down on the shoddy practises. A couple of days later, it was the turn of the unions to smear those umbrellas which exploited workers, particuarly in the construction sector.
Meanwhile, agencies and umbrellas who operate 'by the book' were left fearing that they might all be bundled up in the same plans to target the 'cowboys'.

Meanwhile there was a welcome climbdown by HMRC who have diluted some of the more controversial aspects of its proposed powers to take money owed to them straight from tax-payers bank accounts. The professional bodies gave cautious welcomes to the additional safeguards.
