David Cameron, Prime Minisrer said: "I have huge respect for those who leave the comfort of a salary, strike out on their own and try to build something from scratch."

He said that the Conservative Party had, 'changed the tax system to support the self-employed, clamped down on late payment, set up schemes like Start-up Loans and liberated sole traders from needless regulations like health and safety'.

Mr. Cameron said there has never been a better time to start a business 'and I want that to remain the case after the election with a business-friendly government, led by me, that does everything it can to back enterprise'.

Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the LibDems said: "If you want a glimpse of the sort of worker that will thrive in the new economy, you need look no further than the growing number of self-employed professionals."

SNP
And from North of the Border Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland was full of praise for the energy and drive of freelancers and the self-employed. She said: "The Scottish Government will always support Scottish businesses, and take actions to boost jobs and competitiveness and tackle inequality. Entrepreneurs, freelancers and the self-employed are key drivers of sustainable growth in Scotland.

"My government will be enthusiastic in our support for jobs and business, and my door will always be open".

UKIP
Nigel Farage, leader of UKIP, said: "UKIP will always be on the side of entrepreneurs and the self-employed."

He promised action on the scourge of late payments saying ‘delays in payment are not merely a question of laziness, but are acts of deliberate malice'.

On the issue of procurement, he said: "In UKIP, we believe that the UK’s 4.5million self-employed are our greatest innovators who deserve the support of, not interference from, the state."

Green Party
Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party, said: "We will ensure self-employed people can claim absolutely equal rights with employees.

She argued the self-employed sector is an excellent fit for the Party who 'stand for the rights of small businesses ahead of larger corporations'.

Labour
IPSE said that Labour leader, Ed Miliband, was invited on several occasions to join the debate in IPSE Magazine but was the only main party leader not to take up the organisation's requests to take part.

On the agenda

Responding to the Party leaders' comments, Simon McVicker, Director of Policy and External Affairs at IPSE, said: "The fact that the Party leaders are engaging with us at this incredibly busy and important time shows that self-employment is well and truly on the political agenda.

"All of the Party leaders who chose to take part have acknowledged the importance of self-employed professionals and contractors. It's fantastic that they are getting the recognition they deserve as the engines of our economy.

"The leaders have shown a clear understanding of some of the issues independent professionals face, particularly the scourge of late payment, and it's encouraging to see policies they will implement if they win in May. We hope that once the next Government has been formed, promises will turn into concrete action to help self-employed professionals across the country flourish.”
