Freelancer call to action as trade group is 'hugely worried'
by Susie Hughes at 10:35 17/11/15 (Political News)
Freelancer and self employed lobby group, IPSE has said that it is 'hugely worried' about the recent press reports that the Autumn Statement could contain a clampdown on freelancers.
Unconfirmed reports in the Daily Mail and the Guardian suggested that the Government is thinking about introducing a one month limit to contracts, after which the contractors will be put on the client's payroll. (See: New idea for freelancer crackdown would cause 'untold damage' - Nov 2015, Shout99).

Now, IPSE is calling on contractors to lobby their individual MPs and have provided a template letter to help the call to action.

Chris Byrce, CEO at IPSE said: "IPSE has been engaging with the Government on this issue already, making clear any such change cannot be considered sensible in any way and that any such proposal should be discarded.

"It would make operating a freelance business almost impossible in many instances, and would cause untold damage to the UK's economy. It comes on top of damaging proposals to end travel and subsistence tax relief, increase dividends taxation and toughen IR35 small business tax regulation.

"We want the Chancellor to understand just how badly this rumoured change would impact the smallest businesses in the UK."

They have provided the basis of a template letter here.

In a shout-out to contractors, Chris Bryce, said: "IPSE really needs your help to stop our businesses being destroyed and the world of contracting being changed forever. We will continue to fight on your behalf so that you can continue to do what you do best – run your business as a business and not a cash cow for Government."

The Autumn Statement takes place on November 25 and Shout99 will be reporting on the details of all measures affecting contractors, freelancers and small businesses.
