More criticism for Government over National Insurance rise

The row over the rise in National Insurance for the self-employed continues to gain ground amid accusations that the Government has reneged on a manifesto commitment not to raise taxes; and that it will penalise entrepreneurs.

Prime Minister, Theresa May, entered the fray and claimed that the rise in self-employed National Insurance Contributions announced at the Budget, was "fair". Advertisement However, this was strongly contested by freelancer and self-employed group, IPSE. Their Chief Executive, Chris Bryce said: "The self-employed are some of the hardest working people in the UK. These are the people who should be supported by the Prime Minister. "They give an incredible amount to our economy, have to pay for their own holiday entitlement and have no employer contributing to their pension. They take risks that aren’t asked of regular employees. It's only fair to treat them with respect. "Many self-employed people will have voted for the Conservative Party on the basis of their commitment not to increase NICs, and we question the advice that led them to abandon a key Manifesto pledge. “We are urgently seeking meetings with the Prime Minister and Chancellor to discuss the detrimental impact this Budget announcement will have on the self-employed.
