Jobserve's blowing bubbles
by Susie Hughes at 10:00 15/05/03 (News on Business)
One West Ham fan had particular reason to be disappointed with his team's relegation, as Jobserve's founder and Hammers supporter, Robbie Cowling, has just signed a two-year shirt sposorship deal with the club.
Jobserve, an internet-based recruitment business, will have its redesigned logo featured on West Ham's new Reebok kit. The club and company have also agreed a partnership to enable easy and complementary access between the two websites and Jobserve's Job Explorer Bus will be a regular visitor to the Boleyn Ground on match days.

However, as the decision for the relegation places went to the wire on the last day of the season, the results went against the Hammers and the Jobserve logo will be on display in the lower levels in the First Division rather than the prestigious - and rich pickings - of the Premiership.

Robbie Cowling, founder and Managing Director of Jobserve said: "It is no secret that I am a huge fan of West Ham United. However, the way we have formatted this sponsorship deal will not only be great news for Jobserve, through the publicity it creates, and is not just a good deal for West Ham United, because of the sponsorship revenue it generates, but is designed to create a partnership with West Ham United and the work they do for the local community to present Jobserve with a massive opportunity to integrate their services into this environment."

But while the bubbles were bursting for his team, Robbie Cowling can take comfort that his business is riding high even if his team wasn't. He was recently placed at 439 in the Sunday Times Rich List of 2003 which estimated that the business was worth £72 million.

Jobserve is owned by Cowling and his family. He left school with little qualifications to train as a car mechanic. He launched Jobserve in 1993 from his Essex base and, in 2001, made £12.4 million profit on £15.7 million sales.

The success of the business has allowed him to indulge his footballing passion. He is reported as once having paid £50,000 to transport the club's fans to a Cup tie and was once quoted as saying that if he could mix business with pleasure, he would buy West Ham.
