London Olympics? Opportunity for SMEs
by Susie Hughes at 09:00 15/07/04 (News on Business)
A Minister from Australia who was responsible for encouraging small business promotion in the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 has told London business organisations how an Olympics needs businesses of every size and description, to provide everything 'from toilet paper to asparagus’.
The Hon Sandra Nori MP, Minister for Sport, Tourism and Recreation for the State of New South Wales, met representatives from London First, CBI London, the Federation of Small Businesses (London Region), London Chamber of Commerce, Gateway to London, East London Chamber of Commerce, West London Business, South London Business and the Central London Partnership, and also the London Development Agency.

She said: "We were very keen to show that anyone could tender for Games contracts, large or small. We helped smaller firms by giving them a guide to the tendering process. It gave them some great experience, new business, and even more than that, it gave them the confidence to build their business after the Games.

"The word Olympics really opens doors. Businesses who have that on their cv are at an advantage."

Mel Barrett, director of business development at the London Development Agency, said: "It was extremely useful for our business support team to hear about the Sydney experience. We are already considering some of the measures we would need to put in place to ensure as many businesses as possible maximize opportunities from the bid. The Games would really be a fantastic opportunity for businesses both in London and the rest of the UK."

Initiatives the New South Wales government established included an organization promoting inward investment, a business roundtable, and an Australian Technology Showcase to showcase innovative Australian products around the world. The Australian Technology Showcase has gone from strength to strength.
