HMRC can issue the £100 late-filing penalty even if there is no tax to pay, or the tax on time. The longer the delay sending in the paper return, the more the penalty could be, as there are further penalties after three, six and 12 months.
However, the deadline only applies to paper returns, filing online is available up to January 31, 2015.
As well as having an extra three months to send in the return via internet, filing online means your tax is calculated automatically and the return is processed faster.
Whichever way you choose to submit your return, the deadline for paying any tax owed is January 31.
Help and advice on filing your return is available from the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk/self-assessment-tax-returns.
