Freelance group defends council spending on consultants
by Susie Hughes at 20:14 15/01/15 (News on Business)
A freelancer representative body has responded to reports that local councils have spent £5 billion on agency and consultancy workers, saying the reports are “overlooking the vital service that contractors provide for public bodies”.
Simon McVicker, Director of Policy and External Affairs at IPSE, said: “The reports on local council spending on consultants are overlooking the vital service that contractors provide for public bodies up and down the country. Consultants with specialist skills are an invaluable resource for the public sector. They provide specialist skills, often at short notice, and their expertise can be used to manage peaks and troughs in demand.

“With councils cutting spending and more permanent staff being axed, councils are reliant on consultants to tap into their expertise on a flexible basis. By only hiring consultants as and when they are needed, the overall cost is more effectively managed, compared to hiring full time employees.

“Instead of seeing the rise in spending on consultants as a problem, we should be embracing the flexible, specialist service that independent professionals provide to both public and private organisations across the country.”
