Freelancers respond to Labour Party conference
by Susie Hughes at 15:18 30/09/15 (News on Business)
As the Labour Party pack their suitcases after their first Party Conference under the new direction of Left-wing leader, Jeremy Corbyn, the freelancer group, IPSE, comments on the speeches which might impact on the small business community.
Business
On the Shadow Business Minister, Angela Eagle's address to the Labour Conference, Simon McVicker from IPSE said: "Angela Eagle stated that Labour will be pro-business, and pro-employee - but Labour cannot allow itself to forget the self-employed workforce. There are 4.5 million people in the UK working for themselves. They contribute so much to our economy and need to be supported by parties of all colours."

Shadow Chancellor

On Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell's plan to refocus the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.....

"A wider scope for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to invest in the UK's infrastructure is a welcome announcement, but a more active BIS should be careful to enable businesses to thrive, not add to the burdens they already experience."

Tax avoidance
On plans to address tax avoidance.......

"Tackling tax avoidance is a fine ambition, but the Labour Party need to make sure any plans they have don't inadvertently hurt genuine small businesses. It was a Labour Government that introduced IR35, which was designed to tackle 'bogus self-employment' but in the end caused a great deal of pain to freelance workers who legitimately operate their businesses through limited companies."
