Self-employment changing the face of the labour market
by Susie Hughes at 16:27 15/12/16 (News on Business)
Self-employment continues to rise as official employment figures show that those choosing to work for themselves has increased by 129,000 to 4.75 million in the three months to November.
Lorence Nye, from freelancer group IPSE, said: “The continued growth of self-employment reflects a permanent shift in the structure of the labour market. More people are recognising the benefits of being their own boss and working flexibly.

"The rise in self-employment highlights the importance of the numerous reviews into employment practices. Chief among these is the Government-commissioned Matthew Taylor Review of workers’ rights.

"As self-employment becomes ever more widespread, we need to see radical thinking to ensure some of the biggest issues for these workers – pension provision, fair maternity pay, and simpler taxation – are addressed.”
