The first week was setting the scene and looking at the contribution freelancers made to themselves, their clients and the UK economy.
This week looks at the opportunities and the barriers faced by freelancers in accessing those opportunities, including:
- Working with other SMEs
- Working in Europe
- Working on Public Sector contracts
Freelancers who live in Mark Prisk MP(Con) or Tony McWalter MP (Lab) constituencies are able to contribute their evidence direct to their MP in a unique constituency consultation forum. When you have logged in to the APPSBG website, enter your post code into your profile and the Novacaster system will enable posting rights to these areas.
With nine out of 10 small businesses unrepresented by any trade association the on-line consultation exercise is an attempt at providing them with a voice. It is hoped that the open and transparent nature of the consultation process, will also be influential in "making the case for freelancers".
The pace of the consultation process is demanding and on-line evidence is being taken up to the 8th June 2003. A public hearing will take place at the House of Commons on June 11 where MPs and Peers will be able to take evidence from a range of representative bodies and individual clients, agents, accountants and freelancers. Anyone willing and able to provide evidence at the public hearing at the House of Commons on June 11th (1600 to 1800 Hours, Committee Room 19) is requested to apply via email freelancer@smallbusinessgroup.org.uk with your details.
