Ask An Expert
by Susie Hughes at 08:00 14/11/03 (Viewpoint)
I have had some queries about the 'Ask An Expert' section of the Shout99 site, so thought it might be useful if I explained the purpose and structure of it.
On the navaid, there is a section called 'Ask An Expert', where freelancers are invited to submit questions - free of change - to a panel of Shout99 experts covering legal, accounting, insurance and some business matters.

These professional practitioners voluntarily respond to the questions according to their own areas of expertise. Each evening, all of them receive an email alert to the new questions which have been submitted and respond accordingly.

After they have been answered, I sometimes pick some of questions I think will have wider appeal and move them from the 'Ask An Expert' section to the front page.

Dates
For those eagle-eyed members of the Shout99 network, this has raised a question. How is a question is occasionally dated after the date stamp on the answer? It isn't, the date stamp on the question is the time I've moved it from the Ask An Expert area to the front page not the time it was originally submitted. I didn't change the time of the answer - but wanted the question (and answer) to appear at the top of the front page - hence the more recent posting time.

Responses
I've also been asked why anyone can't reply to these. The explanation is that while anyone can post a question - in the 'Ask An Expert' section, we've restricted the answers to the professional practitioners, so that the questioner knows his answer is coming from a qualified lawyer or accountant.

The facility, Letter from Freelancers, allows more general discussion of issues where other freelancers are welcome to give advice or share their experiences.

Who are the experts?
The experts are all leading practitioners, probably with a greater combined knowledge of issues affecting freelancers than any other grouping. They volunteer their time to answer the questions and receive no payment for their services.

By clicking on their names - here or in the answers - you can learn more about their companies and their own backgrounds.

I am grateful for their on-going support and commitment to Shout99.
