The newly formed Construction Advisory Committee aims to provide a voice for the 640,000 who work for themselves in construction and have their own specific concerns with the UK’s regulatory environment.

The inaugural meeting in September included a discussion on the challenges faced by freelancers to be recognised by HMRC and not be labelled tax avoiders, tax simplification and the shortages of skilled workers in the sector.

IPSE Chief Executive Chris Bryce said: “Construction is a very important sector in the British economy, and self-employed construction workers are key to its success.
"People working for themselves in the construction industry face a specific set of challenges, such as overcoming stereo-typical views, finding affordable training opportunities, and skills shortages. They also have to operate with the additional burden of the Construction Industry Scheme.
"Fourteen per cent of the UK's self-employed workforce operate in construction. IPSE is proud to have set up a new advisory committee in this area, Chaired by Hudson's David Jackson, to ensure workers have a stronger voice. This important section of the freelance community is vital to the future growth of the economy."
Committee Chair David Jackson said: “We believe this committee is an important step towards a fresh focus on the role of those who are self-employed in construction.
“They don’t want to be viewed as different to other sectors in the freelance community. They are – and want to be – recognised as being genuinely self-employed, pure and simple, and it is high time that they are regarded as an asset to the UK economy.”
